Lisa Jacobson and Spiro Garbis met June 20, 2003, through Julie Cronin (Maid of Honor) and Craig Czerkies at Quigley’s Irish Pub in Naperville. Lisa was with Julie, Rose, Chris, and Stephanie enjoying a drink. Spiro was hanging out with Craig, Sean, and Joe.

When Lisa heard Spiro’s name, she asked if he was named after a bird? It turned out Spiro was Greek and was named after his grandfather. After that was cleared up, their first date was at Papadeaux Restaurant in Oak Brook on June 25, 2003. They go there annually marking the anniversary.

A year and a half later Spiro called Lisa’s dad to meet for breakfast. They went to Egg Harbor in Naperville and Spiro asked Mr. Jacobson for his permission. Spiro felt that was the right thing to do. Mr. Jacobson was surprised, honored, and happy to get Lisa off his hands!

On February 19, 2005, Lisa and Spiro went to dinner at Moshi Moshi, a sushi restaurant in downtown Naperville. After dinner, they walked to a local candy store, which is Lisa’s favorite place! As they walked around beautiful downtown Naperville, holding hands, Spiro nervously got on one knee at Washington and Chicago Avenue in front of Barnes & Noble Bookstore.

Spiro said, “I got your father’s permission. I’ve waited 37 years to do this.” As he opened the box, “Will you marry me?” Lisa was very surprised. Lisa replied, “It’s beautiful, put it on my finger.“ After the ring went on her finger she asked, “So you got my dad’s permission? What did he say.” Spiro replied, “You didn’t have to ask, but sure.” Lisa preceded to ask another question. At this point, Spiro still on one knee as people stared then said, “Honey, do you have an answer for me?”

Lisa not realizing she never answered him, said “YES, YES!” As they hugged and kissed, a group of people clapped and cheered. One lady asked if they just got engaged and Spiro and Lisa answered, “YES!” She wanted to see the ring and then asked, “Is the ring real?!?!?!” Spiro replied, “It better be!” Family and friends were then called to share in the moment.
